Once a year, top to bottom
Test every shut-off valve, flush the water heater, check supply lines behind toilets and under sinks, and look for corrosion at fittings.
Check your water pressure
Anything above 80 psi stresses fixtures and appliances. A $12 gauge on a hose bib tells you whether you need a pressure regulator.
Replace the cheap parts on schedule
Braided supply lines, washing machine hoses, and toilet fill valves are inexpensive and are the most common cause of sudden indoor flooding.
